8k broadcasting in the UK took a step nearer reality last night, with a successful 8k broadcast trial of the UEFA Europa League match between Arsenal and Olympiacos.
The landmark, a collaboration between BT Sport and Samsung, was delivered using a bespoke BT Sport 8k outside broadcast set-up, feeding Samsung QLED 8k screens, at the Emirates Stadium. The live 8k footage was delivered over IP to QLED TVs at the Stadium, at 50Hz. The match was shot with a single Sony 8k UHC8300 camera, so also involved upscaling from other 4k cameras around the ground.
It’s no surprise that BT has jumped in early with 8k, as it has a history of breaking broadcast ground, setting the pace with live 4k sports acquisition and deploying Dolby Atmos audio.
